The Best Amish Apple Grunt Recipe
Grunts are not the sounds you make – they are a stewed or baked fruit dish. A biscuit dough is rolled and placed over the top of the fruits. Also call “slumps”.
Preheat oven to 375* F. and butter a baking dish; set aside.
In large bowl, cream:
½ cup sugar
2 tablespoons butter
Beat in:
1 large egg – mix well
In medium bowl, whisk together:
1 cup flour
½ teaspoon Kosher salt
½ teaspoon baking powder**
In small bowl or cup, combine:
½ cup buttermilk** or sour milk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon baking soda
Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture and add milk mixture at the same time.
Stir in:
2 cups apples, peeled, cored and sliced
Pour into prepared pan.
Sprinkle with Crumb Mixture.
Crumb Mixture
In small bowl, combine, blending until mixture resembles crumbs:
6 tablespoons brown sugar, firmly packed**
1 ½ tablespoons flour
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 ½ tablespoons butter (not margarine)
Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until cake tests done and apples are tender.
Serve with cream, ice cream or frozen yogurt.

**You can easily make your own when in a pinch or to save money!
To make sour milk for this recipe:
Place 2 teaspoons white vinegar in measuring cup and add milk to measure ½ cup; let sit for 10 minutes.
To make your own buttermilk for this recipe:
Place 1 tablespoon white vinegar n measuring cup and add milk to measure ½ cup; stir; then stir in ½ teaspoon baking soda.
Best Mixed Vegetable With Chicken Liver
Ingredients :
Cauliflower
Chinese Celery
Chicken liver (Optional) could replace with pork or chicken meat
Ginger
Garlic
Onion
oyster sauce
Spring Onion
Corn Powder
Ginger, onion and garlic cut into small pieces. Chicken liver clean with salt and then cut into slice.
Stir-fry all the ginger, onion and garlic.
Add in chicken liver to stir fry until it cook.
Add in Chinese celery and stir fry again.
To make this dish cook faster, I would cook the cauliflower with boil water first. Then just add to stir fry for a while.
Then seasoning with oyster sauce, salt and thicken the sauce with corn powder water.
At last, topping with spring onion before serve.
Fried Four Angled Bean
Sometimes, when I want to make the cooking time as short as possible, then I will boil the four-angled bean before stir-fry. So that I do not have to spend more time to stir-fry until it cooked.
Ingredients :
Four Angled Bean (Winged bean)
Oyster Sauce
Garlic
Salt
Slant cut four angled bean into 1 inch length.
Heat oil and stir0fried chop well garlic until fragrant.
Add in four angled bean to continue stir fried for 5 minutes (if never boiled before).
Add in oyster sauce and a bit of salt to stir fry for one or two minutes.
Serve.
p/s : If you boiled the four angled bean before stir fry, you could straight away add in oyster sauce right after added four angled bean.
